Jealousy!

Do you want to know what jealousy is for me??

Jealousy is...

Knowing that my parents will be in Arizona next week for two whole days with Brandon before I get there!!!!!!!

Yes, my parents are going out to Mesa to meet Brandon and his parents/family, but they are flying in on Wednesday, and I don't fly in until Friday!!! My parents will be staying at Brandon's house, eating dinner with him, seeing the area a little, and hanging out without me!!!

I will be here mooping around, sulking, and probably whining because I will be wishing I was there hearing every conversation, and seeing how they interact with each other, and wishing that I was there when they meet for the first time, and wishing I was the one that was introducing them to each other!!!

SOOOO JEALOUS!!!

Tickets

About three weeks ago I got a little fed up with the way the kids were not listening and following directions...a common feeling of most moms! And so I stole an idea that my friend had used...TICKETS!

The kids earn tickets for doing good deeds, helping each other, doing chores, using manners, being respectful, etc. And I take tickets away for being disrespectful, not following directions the first time I ask, backtalk, being sassy, not doing chores, etc.

There is no set amount, which is nice. For example, I will say, "Lily, will you please put away all the shoes and I will give you 3 tickets." Or I will say, "The first one to pick up puzzles gets 2 tickets." It works out really well, because they all dive in and help out, and pitch in to earn tickets. Now after three weeks, they willingly clean up, and do things for me around the house. They are a lot more respectful, and a LOT more obedient! I even find them doing the "little things" when they think I am not looking, and sometimes they even forget to ask for tickets sometimes because they have just gotten into such a good routine of helping one another.

If I take them away, it can be just a few...or all of them. For example, I could say, "Ash, you didn't pick up your coat and hang it up when I asked, so I am taking away a ticket." Or even something like, "Lily, you hit Ashlyn so you lose all your tickets." There is a no tolerance policy here when it comes to acts of violence. :)

At the end of the week, if they have 50 tickets then they can cash them in for something at the 'dollar spot' at Target. Or for Noah, he cashes in 25 tickets for an extra hour of staying up at night. He loves to stay up until 9p, instead of his usual 8p, so everyday he looks for ways to help out and even does extra chores to earn 25 tickets a day.

Their favorite way to earn a fast ticket is by answering, "yes mother," when I ask them to do something. If they quickly respond with a "yes mother," then they automatically earn one ticket. So now ALL the time, the kids will quickly answer like that when I call them to do something. It's kind of comical!

I have really enjoyed doing things this way. I am more patient, and the kids are following directions better than ever! Hallelujah for new ways to parent!!!!!!!!!!!

Weekend with Brandon

Last Friday I still had to work, but just 7 hours, before they finally let us go early. Then straight from work, I headed home to finish vacuuming the upstairs, and changed into cute jeans to go and pick up Brandon from the airport. The kids were at their dads, so it was nice to be able to rush around a bit and not have to juggle them too! I rushed to the airport and waited there on the curb for him...butterflies and nerves consumed my stomach!! Why was I feeling so nervous again?? Oh, I remember...because this was like a second date! Yes, Brandon and had been talking for 7 weeks, and we were committed to each other, but still!! This was technically only the second time that I was seeing him!! AND this visit was so important!! Brandon was going to meet the kids!! There was a lot riding on this 'second date!'

As soon as I saw him I thought the butterflies would have gone away. Nope...not so much. I was happy to see him...giddy in fact. But the butterflies were still there. I think just because I was so nervous about him and the kids meeting and worrying about how it was going to go.

We headed to Schlotzsky's for dinner then back here to show him the place. It would only be this clean once, so I wanted him to get the complete tour before the kids got home and it looked lived in! Well, he got the tour, and then there was a knock at the door...THE KIDS were home! I opened the door, and they saw Brandon. I think my heart stopped! It's like time was going in slow motion! Lily immediately ran to Brandon and hugged him. Then Noah said "hi," and then Ash. They were a little shy, but polite and warm. Okay...so far so good. I had all the kids get in their jammies, and then meet us in the living room for a treat. I had just made chocolate chip cookies, and in fact they were still warm, so I thought they could have a cookie, chat with Brandon, and then head to bed. But Lily had other plans. Lily wanted to play princess 'Bingo' with Brandon. Brandon happily accepted the invitation to play, and quickly sat on the living room floor with her. Ash joined in, so then I did too. We each took turns. Within minutes it was just down to Brandon and Lily to see who would win the last 'Bingo.' I looked over at Brandon's bingo card, and he had a bingo. So I called out, "Brandon got Bingo!" He quickly shhh'ed me. (In a nice way) But, then whispered in my ear, "I want Lily to win." What?? He is going to let my 6-year old beat him at Bingo? How cute is that!? You all may think that is so stupid? But to me, it was so adorable. It was the start of their little bonding moment. Seconds later, Lily won, and screamed with delight. I looked at Brandon, and he was smiling too! He was happy that he made her happy. And she was happy she won! The night went really great! And when it came time to tuck the kids in bed, he happily joined in tucking them all in, and hugged them all goodnight. Lily asked if she could kiss him goodnight (she is my affectionate girl), and I said, "no" but told her that she could kiss him on the cheek. She happily kissed him on the cheek, hugged him, and then was quickly out like a light!

Saturday we were going to go to a RV show downtown with some friends from the ward. We just thought that was something that the kids would love, and that Noah would especially love. It was fun and relaxing. I just let the kids go from one RV to another, but they had to stay together, or at least be within ine RV of each other, so they couldn't go too far ahead.

I stood in amazement the whole time at what a "natural" father-role Brandon played. At the beginning of the day, I told Brandon to just enjoy the day with the kids. Relax, enjoy, and let me parent. I wanted him to be the "good-guy" and to build a friendship with the kids this first weekend with them.

But it still amazed me how he just jumped in and helped out like it was second nature. Noah and him held hands through the majority of the show...SO CUTE!! Lily was scared to get on a escalator, and so he scooped her up, and carried her onto it, so she wouldn't be scared. He would stand by the RV and wait for Ash so that we wouldn't lose her if I was at another RV with the other kids. He was always watching out for them, and making sure they were okay.

Then there came lunch...hot dogs were $3.50 and I think that it just outrageous!! I didn't want Brandon to have to spend so much money, so I packed lots of snacks, and just ordered the kids three hot dogs. He insisted that there would be leftovers, so there was no need to order himself one. First of all...was he implying that he was going to eat my kids leftovers?? Yup. Within minutes of ordering the hot dogs, and finding a place to sit and eat, Ash and Noah were "full." Their leftovers equalled one whole hot dog. Brandon offered to polish off their leftovers, and then just looked at me, smiled, and said "I told you there would be leftovers." I hate when he is right!! :)

The kids hugging Yogi Bear at the RV show
Noah wearing a live snake at the RV show
Lily wearing the live snake...she was little freaked out at first because the head of the snake was going for her face!

Later that night we went out for date night!! Hallelujah!! The kids went to a friends house, and we headed to Liberty Jail. Seeing as how Brandon is from the west, he hasn't done a lot of the LDS tourist sites that are throughout the midwest, so I thought that we should do it while he was here. I was so overcome with the Spirit while I was there! And I always seem to learn something new when I go. I had just gone over Thanksgiving break with the kids and my parents, but it was nice to go again with my sweetheart, and sit there holding hands the whole time listening to the stories of Joseph Smith and the testimonies of the missionaries. What a great way to start date night!
(Inside Liberty Jail)

After Liberty Jail we headed to 'Olive Garden' for dinner!! YUM!! There are no words to describe...carbs!! I love Italian food!! We sat there hand in hand the whole time while we ate, and then I got quiet. He asked what was wrong. I replied, "does it scare you that it's so easy with us?" He was quick to say "no." We talked back and forth about how easy it is for us, our relationship, and how we just seem to fit. It seems too perfect. And yes, I get that not everything will be perfect, and that at times we will disagree. I am not stupid! But with Brandon and I...it's just easy! We see eye to eye on almost everything! Our personalities fit perfectly together. We just...fit. It's a nice...like a little piece of heaven.

Sunday I made a big lunch since we wouldn't have time to eat a family dinner after church. It didn't turn out so good... I was rushing and trying to fit too much into the morning...so in the end, I was embarrassed! The first meal that I made for Brandon was a flop. URG! So frustrating!! After lunch we headed to church. During sacrament I had to take Ash out twice...yeah, that was fabulous. But when I came back in, he had Noah and Lily completely under control. He was a pro. He was rubbing Lily's back, and Noah was snuggled up right next to him, coloring. It was a Kodak moment. At church he got to meet my friends, and then he even came in Primary and help me set up chairs and stayed to watch me conduct opening exercises. It was nerve-wracking!! I don't mind talking to the kids, and being in front of the microphone with only kids, but with him watching...it made me nervous!!

After church we quickly rushed home, he packed his suitcase, I made him a sandwich for the road, and we headed out for the airport.

It was really hard for me to see him go, but I think it was harder for the kids. They REALLY like him!! They all got really sad, and kept asking when they were going to see Brandon again? Then Lily teared up when she hugged him good bye and didn't want to let go. She was hooked! As soon as we pulled away from the curb, all three kids said, "I miss Brandon!" It tugged at my heart, but also made me happy. I am so glad that they liked him so much!! What a relief! The kids loved Brandon...and Brandon loved them!

It was a great weekend!! But it went by way too fast!!!!!!
Brandon and the kids Sunday morning. I didn't realize his eyes were closed...sorry sweetheart! But I still wanted to post the picture. That is how Ash looked almost every time I saw her...snuggled up on his lap. :)

Clarification

Do I seem confusing on my blog?

I always read over my posts multiple times before I post them, but then it never seems to fail that I have people call or e-mail me and say that my most recent blog post is confusing.

So, to clarify my last two posts...

I wanted my job because I wanted to use my education, learn new skills, help people, make some money, and I wanted to quit being a financial burden on people and support me and the kids on my own. BUT, I felt torn because of course I also wanted to be a full-time stay at home mom. Well, after talking with family and my leaders I decided to quit, stay home, put my kids first, and try other methods to make money (by not working a full-time night shift job). BUT, when I went in to quit, they asked me to stay on for one month to finish out the schedule. SO, I am working for one month...at this point. Maybe more if it all ends out working out okay. But that isn't my intention. AND, just because I felt so torn about my decision, doesn't mean that I am not excited to work for this Hospice Care center. I feel blessed to be able to do it even for a month, and to be with such a great company. So that was why I posted the most recent post. I am not planning on working long, but I wanted to tell everyone about the place that I will be working. It's an amazing place, and I am super excited to use my education, and learn life-long skills.

Does that clarify it, or does that make it more confusing??

Job

I thought I would tell everyone about my new job! I am so SUPER excited about this opportunity!!

I got a job a 'John Knox Village' here in Kansas City. It is a GIANT retirement community with over 450 acres! There are homes, duplexes, apartments, a long term care facility, and now a brand new hospice care center! At John Know they have their own police, EMT's, security, trash removal, etc. It's really like a little town. It has shops, restaurants, a golf course, salon, pools, etc, etc. It is so absolutely amazing!! What I love about it is that the residents can buy/rent packages depending on their needs. So people can have in home hospice care, housekeeping, people can come in and make their meals, and the list goes on and on. But everyone has the extras for free...like, counseling, snow removal, a free handyman to even just come and hang a picture, the 24-hour security, etc. The entire community is simply perfect for those that have retired!

This week at orientation all of us that got hired to work there got to tour the new unit. It is so beautiful!! The rooms are state of the art, and are top notch! Each room has hardwood floors, is private, has a pull-out couch for the families that sleep there, has a refrigerator, microwave, flat-screen TV, full bath, & heat lamps in the ceiling (people have a hard time regulating their own body temperatures when they are close to passing). Then at the end of the unit there is a 'family room' that has everything! It has a 48 flat screen TV, full-sized washer and dryer (for the patients families), a full shower/bath, 3 computers with Internet access, couches, and a kid play area! Also, there will be no paper charting, so there are computers mounted on the walls outside the patients room for charting!

I feel SOOOO blessed to have this job! I applied, had an on the spot interview at the job fair they held, and they received my offer two weeks later! I will get paid more than any other CNA, and mostly because I am hospice. And I already have paid time off accruing. (Which is good since I am going to Arizona next month to see Brandon again!)

There really are no words to describe how blessed I feel. I am so glad that I felt inspired to get my CNA certificate, and that I will finally have my foot in the healthcare door!

Oh, and did I mention that John Knox Village (JKV) got licensed to have the hospice are center be like a hospital. We will do IV's, pick lines, chemo treatments, blood transfusions, etc. I will learn so many skills that will prepare me to be a better RN in the future!

So why hospice?? When I was doing a clinical rotation at one of the nursing homes, there was a patient dying in her room. The RN went in to take her temperature and then came out and said, "just leave her alone, she is passing." No one volunteered to change her brief, no none offered to rotate her (which by law you have to do every two hours to prevent bed sores), no one offered to put a cold washcloth on her forehead because of her fever(patients almost always spike a fever right before they pass). They all just thought that they should just leave her alone! It seriously BROKE my heart! So after the nurse walked away, I went in and changed her, changed her position, put a cold washcloth on her forehead. Then I sat by her, rubbed her arm, and whispered to her, "it's okay to go, you can go see Heavenly Father now."

Throughout my shift I would go into her room frequently, making sure that she was dry, rotate her, change her if she wasn't dry, and then would rub her face, her head, her arms. I wanted her to know that someone was with her, and that she wasn't alone. Before I left at the end of my shift, I went in one last time, and kissed her on the forehead, and told her that she could go now. The next morning she passed.

I will NEVER forget the way I felt! I always thought I would do Labor and Delivery! All my life I wanted to watch babies being born, and to be a part of that experience. But almost seeing someone almost pass, all alone, and not getting quality care changed my life. Within days I applied for that job at JKV. I wanted to be with people right before they passed, I wanted to make sure that no one ever felt alone as they left this life, and I wanted to make sure that they were still taken care of up until that point.

So, now, on Febuary 4, I start my first night shift, with my own patients. I am more than excited to do this, more than excited to learn great skills, and more than excited to share this experience with patients and their families! BUTTTTT, I am also so nervous! I have never seen someone pass, and so for me to sit there and hold their hand while they do...will tear me up inside! AND I will be in charge of post-mortem care!! To bathe and dress someone that has just passed...will be very emotional for me!! This job will push me to new limits, both emotionally & physically. It will be hard, it will be draining, it will be tiring...but I KNOW that it will all be worth it!

I feel so good about this job, about the position, the opportunity, the place where I will be, and about the skills I will learn! I feel blessed to even have a job, let alone one that I will love so much! I feel grateful, that will be will be able to provide for me and the kids just a little (even if I do have to still have some help), and that I will be somewhat self-sufficient after 3 months of help from my family!

It's a lot to take in!!

But above all, so just feel grateful!

And I guess in the end, I will just pray for strength, and patience, because hopefully I won't do this long anyways. At this point, I am only planning on staying a month (see the previous post), but I will see how it goes. Even if it is for a month, I still feel so immensely grateful for the opportunity!

The Decision...

Okay, so after receiving counsel form my priesthood leaders, and receiving advice from my parents, family, and my home teachers, I decided to go ahead and quit my job. Maybe, it just wasn't my time.

But, there was something that wasn't sitting right with me. I wanted to be a stay at home mom, but at what cost to others, and how fair is that to my employer who just spent time & money to train me for the past two weeks? Plus, the schedule for February was already out, so I felt horrible that I would be leaving them empty handed. But then there are my kids!! AH, I felt like I was being pulled in two different directions!!

I went into work yesterday thinking that I would pull my boss aside and quit, or at least offer to finish out the schedule so that she would not get screwed.

My stomach was in knots!! I HATE confrontation, and I hate knowing that I have let someone down!

I walked in, and looked for my boss...all my co-workers were there, but no boss. SHOOT! Now what do I do? So I waited for her to show up, but then right as she walked in, she immediately escorted us to the computer lab because we were supposed to do computer training yesterday. Now how was I supposed to tell her?? Everyone was following her down a long corridor, and I couldn't just pull her aside then! So, after we got seated and everyone was at their computer, she mentioned the schedule. I slowly whispered her name so that I could chat with her privately about it. Now, I was really sick!! I was so scared that she would be mad, or offended!

But, I calmly explained to her the problem, and told her that childcare was an issue, and that I felt like maybe I had bitten off more than I could chew, so I probably just needed to quit now, and stay home with my kids. There was dead, awkward silence for about 5 seconds. So then I quickly interjected, "well, maybe if you want I could at least finish out the schedule so that I don't leave you empty handed." She quickly smiled, and asked another girl if she wanted to change schedules with me since I was in a bind with childcare? I would do part time for that one month, and that girl would go full-time. The girl agreed...I agreed...and we changed it on the schedule.

So, now I am part-time, still nights. But only doing 9 shifts this month. I feel much better about this!!! I feel at peace, and comforted that it is fair for everyone. I am happy that I can still use my skills and my boss didn't get screwed. One shift this month the kids will be at there dads, and one shift they will be at their cousins. So I only had to find childcare for 7 other shifts, and luckily some girls in my ward offered to help out. Plus the times that I need to sleep, they will be at school, and Ash will be at a friends &/or her cousins. It all seems to work out perfectly!

I will just finish out the schedule, and see how it goes. The plan is just to do this for one month. BUT, if the kids are adjusting well, and I am still feeling peaceful, than I will stay on for the month of March. I guess I will just take it one month at a time.

Ah, a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders!! What peace a good decision brings!

And the added bonus, I won't be such a financial burden on those around me.

On a side note, I got a king-sized bed yesterday!! After exactly 3 months of sleeping on the couch, I got a king sized bed!! A friend in the ward offered it to me, and even had some men in the elder's quorm deliver it to my house yesterday...complete with a sheet set! Let me tell you how heavenly it was to stretch out, and sleep diagonally for a night! Blessings all around. I am so glad that I didn't go into debt to get a bed, and that I just waited patiently for one to come along. (yes, other people had offered me their beds, but they were ones from their guest rooms, and I didn't want to impose or inconvience anyone, so I always turned them down. But this was one that they were giving away for free, because they got a new one.) The ironic part was that Noah got sick last night, so he was able to sleep with me on the bed, and I was able to keep a closer eye on him.

Everyday I continue to feel blessed!

January 22, 2011

Overwhelmed!!!!!

I don't know how else to describe what I am feeling...I am just completely overwhelmed!!

I feel more than incredibly blessed to have a home, a roof over my head, electricity, food on the table, to have us all healthy, to be in an amazingly loving & healthy relationship, to have great kids that love me so much, to have good friends, and the support of an amazing family! I love my calling, I love my ward, and I love my life.

BUT, with that being said...I am so overwhelmed with being a single working mom.

HOW? How will I ever make this work? How I will I ever work full-time at night and still be a mom? There was once a conference talk saying that there is no substitute for a loving mother staying home with her children.

I picked nights because it paid better, and because I thought that way I could be the best mom possible! The shift is from 10:30p-7:00a, so this way I just needed to have someone sleep at my house, and yet then when I got home I could wake the kids up, get them all breakfast, and get the big kids on the bus. Then drop Ash off at the babysitters, and sleep till about 3p or so. Then I could wake up, pick up Ash, get the kids off the bus, do homework with them, do dinner as a family, bring Noah to scouts, bring Lily to ballet, etc, etc. I could be a MOM!!! If I worked days, I would miss so much of that!!! I was trying my hardest to just do it all. To be a full-time single mom, to be a full-time CNA, to have a calling, be a housekeeper, a cook, a choefer, etc, etc. And I am now thinking it is impossible.

The problem?? Once I pay for night childcare AND daytime childcare (so I can sleep), I am barely making anything!! Literally.

So, the question has been brought to my attention...what is most important? And holds the greatest VALUE? MY KIDS! Is it worth it to work full-time and have my kids passed from home to home, just so that I can still borrow money from family every month to pay bills, and be exhausted all the time, and not see my kids every other weekend when I work??? IS IT WORTH IT??

Well, no.

I have spent many hours crying over this the past two days!!!! Many is an understatement.

I spent so much time getting my CNA, doing clinicals, studying for state boards, and working my butt off just so that I could work full-time and be self-sufficient. And now, after all my hard work, and months of training, I still won't be self-sufficient. I will still be dependent on family and friends. It's not pride...let's be clear. It's that I wanted to be able to do it on my own. I wanted to be self-sufficient. I don't want to burden anyone. I am humble. Really I am. I realized that I would still need some help from family and friends. I get that. But I didn't want to have to rely on them solely.

I have looked around in my ward, and taken a look at lots of the single moms, and realized they are doing it because they live with family, or by family, work days, and/or have all their kids in school all day. I don't live by family, I have Ash still at home during the day, and I would be working in healthcare...and let's face it, in that industry you always work weekends and holidays and such. It's not a 9-5 job.

So, I have until Monday to make the decision. I have spent hours crying and talking with my parents (and Brandon) about what to do. But the decision is ultimately mine. And unfortunately I don't know what to do. I'm torn.

I want my job so badly!!! I feel so blessed that I got that job!! And it is such an incredible opportunity!! BUT, maybe it isn't my time right now. Maybe for the first time in 2 years, I just need to stay home with the kids and explore other options for making money. Maybe I got that training so that I could still use it later.

So, for the next two days, I will continue to kneel in prayer and try to get an answer. Because I can honestly say, that this decision is harder on me than almost any other decision I have made in my life. Honestly.

I want to be self-sufficient.

I want to to use my education.

I want to say, 'I did it on my own.'

But at what cost?

Noah and his award

Today was Noah's Pinewood Derby! He was so excited about it! This is something that he looks forward to all year! In fact, he already sketched out drawings for what he wants to make the next three years!!

Well, Grandpa Harrington helped him to build his car this year while he was here visiting this week. When Grandpa came last Sunday, he came with the idea of building the monster truck called 'Grave Digger.' Noah was of course pumped!! So they got to work on it Monday while I was at work, and the kids had the day off school because of MLK day. By the time I got home that night my dad and Noah had already done all the construction on it, and had it completely ready to paint. Noah then got the flu the next day...luckily my parents were here to watch him so I didn't have to miss work. What a hidden blessing! So all Tuesday while Noah was veggin' and recouping on the couch off and on, he would take small breaks to get up and paint 'Grave Digger.'

Today he didn't win...because of speed, but he did win 'Most Original Car Design.' YAY Noah! I am so proud of him. He was so great about not winning, he was happy to just be there! He is such an great kid! I feel so blessed to call him mine.

Day off!

Yesterday I had the day off, and the big kids were back in school after their snow day. So, me and Ash just took it easy! It was so incredibly relaxing! I miss those days...the days when I can really just be a mom.

Ash and I spent the morning snuggling on the couch & watching cartoons together, and then did playdough together, and then got out her giant floor mat 'AquaDoodle Pad' and practiced writing her ABC's. It was easy, simple, fun, relaxed...perfect! Just me and my favorite 3-year old.

Snow Days!

Thursday was a snow day for the kids, so they had no school, and I also got called off at work so I got to stay home too. It was really nice to be home with them...and my parents! (They came for 5 days to watch the kids while I worked). We all slept in...if you count 7:30a as sleeping in! And then I made the kids green eggs and ham for breakfast, which they got a kick out of!

Then throughout the day they played out in the snow, watched movies, snuggled, played games, did art projects, and played with play dough.

It was a really nice & relaxing day! And I thoroughly enjoyed it!! I rarely ever get whole days to myself and the kids. It's a luxury to me now, so I just relaxed and enjoyed it.

Let's clear things up...

Okay, I knew as soon as I posted anything about me being in a relationship, the judgements would start coming. And I will say, that overall, I am so happy that most people are being so supportive. BUT, there have been a few comments made, and a few questions asked, so I will address them, and then I am moving on.

#1-Yes, it is fast. From when my divorce was finalized to when Brandon and I talked on the phone was one month. BUT, that doesn't mean that it isn't right! And, I did everything the right way. I waited until my divorce was finalized before I got on any websites, and such. I e-mailed him first. Then we talked on the phone, and I didn't go out there until I had received that personal recommendation about him, and had prayed about it. I went there first so I could scope him out! I was cautious...very cautious. And it still feels so right, so really, why does it matter if it is fast? Plus, only those that have been divorced will understand. It may seem fast on a calendar. But I have been emotionally divorced for two years. An incident happened two years ago this month that made me check out, so although I was still legally with 'S,' I really wasn't there emotionally. Therefore, although this is all so fast, it was still easy for me to open my heart to someone else so quickly because I had been disconnected from 'S' for such a long time. And really, when is the right time? 3 months? 6 months? A year? Only I can answer that.

#2- The kids are fine. More than fine. I will not get into specifics on this, but please know that I wold NEVER do anything to put them in harms way, or to let them get hurt again. They very happy for me! I eased them into the idea of Brandon. I asked Noah's permission to go and visit him, and asked him if it was okay if I had a boyfriend? Noah replied with complete excitement, "yes!" And I recently have let Noah talk on the phone with him, so that they can build a little friendship before Brandon comes out here for a visit. Just please know that I am trying my hardest to be happy and do what's best for me, but I do completely understand that I have kids, and that I have to be cautious for them too! I get it. BUT, anyone who knows my kids knows that they love people! They aren't shy, and they talk to anybody! I have to beg them not to sit on people laps when people come over to the house for a visit! And at times I find it annoying...wishing they were more shy. But now I know that I got these three amazing children and their loving personalities for a reason! They are quick to open their hearts, and quick to love, and that is a good thing, because I think that Heavenly Father knew what I was going to go through, so he sent these kids with these great personalities so that they would be so easy going and easily adaptable in case I ever married again. The kids are great! They can't wait for Brandon to come for visit!

#3-Don't I need time to heal? Yes. BUT, Brandon and I have talked extensively about this. And he is so amazing about it all! He knows that I am scared, and have trust issues, and he just constantly reassures me that no matter what he will treat me with respect and stick by my side! He is so amazing! So, yes, I need time to heal, but it could take many years. And Brandon is part of that healing! He has taught me that there are GREAT guys out there! So I refuse to push him away just because I am scared of getting hurt....he has come into my life at this time for a reason!

#4-How serious is it? Let's put it this way...we are totally committed to each other, and we already constantly talk about our future. There.

Any more questions, or can we all just move on and be happy??

Okay, good. Love you all!

Introducing....Brandon!

Okay, so I know that most of you out there have seen on facebook that I recently made a trip to Arizona to spend the weekend with my guy! And I know that you are all also dying to know the whole story...so here it goes!

Right before my divorce was finalized I said to many people, "I will NEVER do any on-line dating website!" People lie, people put things on their profile that are untrue, and some are even still married when they are on these websites! And given my huge trust issues, I swore I would just never do it. But three weeks after the divorce was finalized, I joined. I know what you are thinking...why? Well, I decided, why not? I am 29, single, and I should live it up. Plus, there aren't many single people here in Missouri, so on-line dating is pretty much my only option.

On December 11, I ran across Brandon's profile. To tell you the truth, there was nothing special about it. He was cute, liked sports, loved the gospel, and said he was easy-going and loved to laugh (well, EVERY profile says that they are easy-going and that they love to laugh!) But, then I went through his pictures...and that's when something caught my eye! There was a picture of him with his little cousin and they were dressed in baseball clothes, and the heading under the picture said something about him coaching little league. SAY WHAT? Okay, I had to send this guy a note. So, I typed up a harmless e-mail to him, just saying that I loved the picture of him with his cousin, and how I thought it was cute that as a single guy, he was willing to coach little league in his spare time. That was pretty much it, and so I signed my name and thought nothing else about it.

The next day, I had an e-mail from him! He said he read over my profile and liked mine too. I really thought it was too wordy, but hey, that's me! Plus, I am going to be really picky the second time around, so it took a lot of words to explain what I wanted in a guy. :)

For one week we e-mailed back and forth harmless, non-flirtatious e-mails daily. They would just say things about our hobbies, our families, callings, etc. Simple. Then one Thursday night I was on that dating website checking my messages, and he popped up and wanted to IM with me. I accepted the invitation, and we chatted back and forth for about an hour. Harmless. Simple. Just small talk. And at this point I still wasn't that impressed. He was polite, and nice and all, but our IM session almost seemed dry. Although he is an accountant, so that didn't surprise me! (sorry babe!!) :)

We had to end our IM session suddenly due to some drama with 'S.' So, I felt like I should apolojize to Brandon for the sudden end in our conversation. I really wasn't thinking that we would ever talk again, remember...it was a dry conversation! But I wanted to be polite. So I sent him an e-mail just saying that I was sorry for our conversation ending so abrubtly. The next day(friday), he e-mailed me and said that he enjoyed our conversation and would love to chat again. I thought, 'really?' But whatever. Maybe from his end he thought things went good??

The next day, Saturday night, I was online checking my messages again, and he popped up to IM again. I ALMOST clicked 'decline,' but I thought, 'he was nice and all, so let's see where this goes.' And I am soooo glad I did!!

After three hours or so of IM'ing, I was hooked! I was laughing so much!! We had so much in common!! So, I guess he just needed to come out of his shell a little. (Which he did write on his profile...that he was shy at first, but then he opens up when he is comfortable). We talked about all the stupidest things, but it was so funny, but he felt the same way about things that I did! We even have the same OCD tendencies!! For example, he lines up his pop in the fridge by rows of what kind of pop it is, and I line up my yogurts by brands and flavors. I know...it seems stupid to some, but we thought it was funny!

After a few hours of IM'ing, I wondered how I could give him my cell phone number without seeming too forward. Sooooo, I typed...'here's my cell phone number for when you want to IM again. Just text me, and I will get online so we can IM again.' Then I typed my cell number. Well, within seconds he texted me! It said, 'is this too soon?' I smiled, got off-line with him, and proceeded downstairs to the couch (where I sleep), and texted him for about another 2 hours. I was giggling the whole time. We had so much in common, and he was so funny!! Where was this guy two nights ago?? He was so 'blah' the first time!

After texting awhile, I made a comment that my fingers were getting tired. He replies back, 'then should I call you?' I immeditely got butterflies. I wanted him to, but I was so nervous!!! This was too fast, too scary, too much! But I just jumped right in, and tried to let go of my fears, and just trusted. Well he called, and we ended up staying up until 4:40am talking. And I got up at 5:30a, because I was babysitting overnight, and that was when the kids woke up. So essentually, I pulled an all nighter. But it was well worth it!! I was smitten with this boy!!

That day was now Sunday, and I sang in the ward choir for the Christmas program. Well, after church he texted me and asked me how the singing went and said that he enjoyed talking with me, and wanted to know if we could do it again that night!! I smiled the biggest smile ever!! And replied that I would love to chat with him again.

Over the next several nights Brandon and I would talk 4-7 hours each night. Also, we would text thoughout the day, and chat on his lunch hours. Well, after only talking for 5 nights/days...I was throughly smitten!! He was so kind, and loving, and sweet, and polite, and funny!!! But what really did it was that he cared about me and the kids so easily!!

On day 5 of talking, Noah got sick, but we were headed up to Minnesota to see my BF Katie and her family for Christmas. I had to leave that day, because there was a snow storm coming through and I didn't want to get stuck in KC, so I piled Noah in the car, gave him a pillow and blanket, said a prayer, and we headed on our way. Well, this sweet man kept calling and asking how Noah was, and asking how my gas was (my gauge is broken, so I just have to keep track of my miles!). I asked him why he was being so nice to me, he replied, 'Because that is just what you do when you care about someone." Ah, this was bliss!! He generally cared about my safety, the safety and health of the kids, and about me being careful on the roads. And there is no way to describe how nice it felt to have someone generally care about me!! HEAVENLY!

After I got to Katie's I was texting Brandon like crazy, that was how we communicated primarily at that point during the day, so I could focus on the kids, than at night we would chat on the phone. Well, Katie and I got into a discussion about my texting and how much I liked this guy so early on, and how fast it was all going. So to ease her fears, I showed her his Facebook page, thinking she would see that he looked harmless, and was actually LDS, and single. (you never know!! Because people lie on those websites all the time!!!)

Oh, let me backtrack, early on, I let Brandon see my blog, and my Facebook page, just so that he would know I wasn't lying about anything. It really helped us early on because it removed all doubt about what either one of us was really like.

Ok, so Katie saw his facebook page and comes to find out, he had a friend that she knew. I screamed!!! I recognized the name because Brandon always talked about this best freind that he had that lived in Minneapolis, MN. But it turns out that his best friend is in Katie's ward!!!!!!!! So Katie immediatley e-mailed the wife and said, "hey, I have this friend here from KC, and she is recently divorced with three kids, and I am really protective of her because I don't want to see her get hurt again. But she met this guy online and supposedly you are good freinds, so can you tell me what you really think of a guy named Brandon S****?"

Her friend replied back with the best recommendation ever!!! She said, "yeah, we know Brandon! He is the best guy EVER!!! Your friend would be so blessed to have him in her life!"

After reading that Katie lighened up, my parents, my sister, my other firends, etc, all laid little low! Having a personal recommendation from someone really helps!!!!!!!!! Especially since there are so many creeps out there!! AND, it really helped me to open up my heart more. I was so scared to trust, and this recommendation really helped to calm some of my fears!

Three days later, on Christmas Day, we had out first date...via text! Him and I think it's cute, but I am sure that some of you want to gag. That's fine. We know we're cute. :) We watched the same movie at the same time, it's just that I was in Minnesota, and he was in Arizona. We even texted that we were holding hands, and such. It was so incredibly cute!!! Ah, text romance! :)

Brandon and I continued to talk and text all the time, and after only one week of talking on the phone, I was so completely head over heals falling for this guy!

We talked about meeting each other. And my condition was that I wanted to go out there first because I wanted to meet his family, and see his work, his house, go to his ward, see the area, etc. I wanted to calm any small fears I had, and any small doubts I had left. I wanted to make sure that I was falling for the 'real' Brandon, and not a liar. Once again, yes, I have trust issues! But Brandon is so amazing about them!! He offered to fly me out, so that I could put to rest any doubts I had. I told him who I wanted to meet, and what I wanted to do when I was there, and he just replied, "yes dear." Isn't he the best!?

Well, I didn't want to meet until the end of January or so, because by then it would've been 6 weeks since we started talking. But then while in Indiana I got my job offer, so because of that, we decided to have me come out sooner. That way I could spend three whole days with him.

So, last friday I flew out to meet Brandon...the guy that I had completely fallen head over heels for. The guy that was so incredibly amazing to me on the phone! But yet, the guy that I had never met!!!

When I got off the plane on friday night I was SICK!!! In fact, that doesn't even begin to describe what I was feeling! I was so nervous! There was so much pressure, because we already had such strong feelings for each other, but yet we had never met!!

Well, we talked on the phone as I went through security, and then he saw me (he said that he was smitten with how beautiful I was!), but I didn't see him for a few more seconds, so he had a total advantage on me! But alas, we made eye contact, and walked towards each other, and gave each other the biggest hug ever!!!!!! There I was...in the arms of my Brandon!

He got my luggage for me, and we started to walk out of the airport and yet, I couldn't even make eye contact with him! I was still so nervous!! I was scared, nervous, & anxious....when will he kiss me...when will he grab my hand...should I just grab his hand...does he think I am cute...is he happy...??? My mind was going crazy!!!!!!!!! So, I decided to just trust, and to put it all out of my mind, and live in the moment. I grabbed his hand, and we walked to the car just making occassional glances at each other. At the car he had a dozen roses for me! When we handed me me the flowers I hugged him again, and then we kissed!! Ah, okay, it was nerve racking, and I was shaking, but from that point on, the night was perfect. We both just had to get the first kiss out of the way so we could relax!!

In the car I dazzled him with my ability to know which direction we were doing...I am a human compass...just one of my many talents! He thought is was great! He actually said how impressed he was! We held hands, we chatted, we were relaxed, and within minutes it felt like we were the normal 'Brandon and Melissa' from the phone. He showed me where he worked (so he was employed...I could check that off my list...check!), and then we went to 'Cold Stone,' and headed back to his house to watch a movie.

By the next morning, we were so comfortable with each other. It was as if we had been married for 20 years. And maybe it is because we are very similar creatures. And maybe it is just because we are so incrediably comfortable with each other. I would pick up the laundry, he would make the beds, I would straighten up the kitchen, he then rotated the laundry, I opened the blinds, he grabbed us drinks for the car...we were in perfect sync with each other. I will say though, it helps that he has been single for so long...he is very self-sufficent, and he likes a clean house, so we fit perfectly together!

Saturday we went to 'Costa Vida' for lunch...YUM!! Then looked at houses, just some model homes for kicks and giggles. It was fun just to see what we both liked and disliked. Amazingly enough, we had everything in common! Seriously!! We agreed on everything, although it does help that he is so easy-going and so agreeable!

After looking at houses, we met up with his cousin and his wife to go bowling! It was so much fun!!!! They are the same ages as us, and we have so much in common with them! Brandon and his cousin are really close and still hang out together all the time, so it was really fun to see them together being so competitve during bowling. Oh, and Brandon scored 179!!! I scored a whopping 52!! Wahoo!! Yay me!!

After bowling we went to dinner at this amazingly awesome and fancy restaurant! It was so beautiful and romantic! There were dim lights, and giant fireplaces all around the restaurtant...it made it really cozy! But the best part was the company. The four of us just had such great conversation, laughed a ton, and found out how much we really do have in common.

At one point I pulled his cousins wife aside, and asked her to just be 100% real with me...to level with me...was Brandon really this great? She said that he was definitely one of the good guys, and I needed to hold onto him tightly, and not let him go! She also gave him a great recommendation and said how perfect we are for each other, and said how cute we look together. Ah, she was right. We did look cute together! Plus, this night helped because I wanted to make sure that he did have good family relations, and check that off my list...check!

(all for of us at dinner)

On Sunday we went to church...there are ward buildings I swear every 4 blocks in Mesa!! It's like living in Utah! But better. He shook people hands, knew people by name...I was impressed...this meant he was active in the church and  had good social skills. So I could check those off my list...Check!

After church we changed, ate leftovers from the night before, talked for hours about lots of important things, and then headed to his Aunt and Uncles house so I could meet the rest of his family. On the way there we had a discussion, (had I still been with 'S' this would've been a huge blown out argument) but with brandon, we still held hands the whole time, talked respectfully, he made his points, I made mine, and then he just asid, "okay, so we discussed it and now we can move on right?" WOW! Can a discussion really go that easily??? He says his point, I say mine, it's resolved, and we move on?? This was heavenly!! Have I mentioned how great our communication skills are?? :)

His family was amazing! They were so accepting, and so inviting. They immendately hugged me, and welcomed me into their home. We laughed, and joked around as if we had been related already for years. Brandon sat quietly the whole time with his hand on my leg and the other one intertwined with mine...watching so see how I interacted with his family. I personally was going crazy! He was being too quiet!! Does that mean that things weren't going as good as I thought? Does that mean that his family doesn't like me?? What does that mean?? Well, nothing. One thing about my guy is that he is quiet when he needs to be, or when he is observing, or just listening. But then he is funny, charismatic, and outgoing when the time comes for it. He's perfect for me. Oh and on a side note, Brandon always opens my car doors...he's old fashioned, which is nice for me, because it reminds me of my dad. Good old fashioned values. But I was concerned that maybe it was all just for show. So, I subtly mentioned it to his aunt, and she said, "no, that is just how Brandon is." Ah, a true gentelman! I could get used to this!

After leaving I asked him what his family thought of me, he replied by saying that when I went to the bathroom his aunt gave him two thumbs up! And his grandma said he was glowing! Who knew a guy a could glow?

Sunday night we talked again for hours on end about all sorts of things. We talked about our future, school, his job, finanaces, our families...he is such an amazing listener, and we communicate so perfectly together! What's funny is that we both swear we already know everything about eachother. We can already order food for each other...know each others favorite songs (in fact surprised me by buying my favorite CD's so I could listen to my favorite songs in the car!)...know about all our families dramas...past relationships...career goals...dreams...you name it, we have talked about it. But what is even better, is that he remembers! He remembers everything I tell him!! It's heavenly!

Monday we went shoppping, and went to 'Costa Vida' for lunch again. Then packed up, and headed for the airport. As I was zipping up my suitcase though, the zipper broke! I looked at him, and was prepared for him to scream. He just looked at the suitcase, tried to fix it, and replied "well, we better hurry to Wal-mart to get you a new one. You grab my keys, and phone and I will carry this." And that was it. It was so simple. So easy. We talked about it the whole way to Wal-mart. I asked him why he didn't get mad at me. He simply just replied, "why whould I? I never get mad." And that is a fact. All of his family said that he never gets mad. He might get quiet, but never mad. Nothing ever bothers him. He really is just that easy going! And how nice for me!! Trust me, this is a nice change!

After switching everything to my new suitcase, we got in the car and sped to the airport. We ran through the airport because we were late (because of the walmart stop), and we just got a few last hugs, a few last kisses, and I was off through security.

So sad.

Within minutes I missed my Brandon!!

So, to sum it up... I had the MOST AMAZING weekend EVER!!!!!!!! I couldn't have asked for anything better!

What are the things that I love most about this guy??
  • He is so career driven...and finanally savvy!
  • He is intelligent!
  • He loves me for me...no mater what I say, or what I have done, his feelings for me never change.
  • He accepts the "package" (all four of us!)
  • He lives the Gospel!
  • He is funny!
  • He has amazing communication skills! And great listener!
  • He is so easy-going!
  • He loves to take care of others, and especially me!
  • He is soft spoken and tender-hearted!
The list really goes on and one, but that 's enough for now, because I am sure you will hear me mention a lot more about him in the future!

So that post was really long, but there is the story of Brandon and I. Hope you enjoyed!

Christmas Day!

Okay, so I totally forgot to blog Christmas Day!! I had two posts just on Christmas Eve, then somehow I skipped Christmas! Obviously, I am a little scatter-brained lately!

The kids woke up at 7:40a on Christmas morning, which I think really isn't bad! And after opening their stockings, we all headed to the basement to watch an LDS Christmas movie that tells us about Christ's birth. It was a tradition of the Ellis's and I think it is a fabulous one! It really brought the Spirit and the meaning of Christmas into their home.

After the movie we headed upstairs to open and the presents. Halfway through we took a little break, got breakfast, and then we finished up opening the presents.

I still feel so immensely blessed that my friend was willing to get my kids Christmas presents, and that a family in her ward wanted to adopt us, so that the could get their Christmas Eve jammies, and one extra present. It was such a great Christmas!! Filled with nothing but love and lots of blessings!
